Chapter 7

Sometimes, I couldn’t help but think fate was out to get me.

Watching Mara soar on the skies above us, slowly moving to poise down, made me feel cheerfulness. I couldn’t deny it. It certainly made the strike force around us cheer. Having the dragon queen with us increased our chances, ensuring we almost certainly could defeat any attack.

I hadn’t expected her to come. And I was happy to see her, though that meant I might very well have a fight on my hands. I doubted she would miss what happened between me and Melusine, mainly because the white-haired female stood to my left, having just returned to base this morning.

It had been two days since we took Five Stone. I didn’t expect to receive any kind of support so soon.

There wasn’t enough open space on the hilltop for my wife to poise down. She had to do it on the cliffside, change into her humanlike form, and walk into the camp. She had a smile on her lips as she did it, her wings were spread wide, and the cheers of her people seemed to invigorate her. Even some of the Zarotians were cheering at her, knowing that our chances were far more significant with her at our side than they had been before.

Then my wife looked at me, and I couldn’t deny how my heart started beating faster at the sight of her. Amaranth was glorious. She had always been, and she would always be. Blonde, blue-eyed, with curves in all the right places. The dragon wings kept tight to her back were the only thing that made her look different from a regular human woman, wings that jerked momentarily to the sides when she put her blue eyes on Melusine.

There was no other reaction on her part at the sight of the white snake. Mara kept a smile on her lips, moved my way, and didn’t hesitate to pull me closer to her when she reached my side, kissing me hard. There was something possessive about that kiss, and I couldn’t deny I enjoyed it quite a bit.

I was still a bit dazed when she pulled back and released me, and I met her smile with one of my own before realizing hers was just a bit sharper than usual. I stopped myself from cringing back at the last moment. Yeah, I was going to get it later.

“My heroic husband,” Mara started, speaking loud enough that the words could spread to those around us. “You were supposed to scout our enemies, not take the fight to them.”

I shrugged. “When an opportunity appears, we would be foolish not to take it, right?”

Mara shook her head at me, gave me a smile that was a bit more honest than the one she had given me before, then leaned in and pressed a quick peck to my lips.

“Tell me everything that’s been going on, and what opportunity is this that you’ve taken.”

I nodded at her, gave her my arm, then directed her to the command tent, gesturing with my head for the strike leaders to join us.
